Rerum Flexius Lamina (Latin for “Reality Bending Layer”) is also known as the RFL Network. It is a planet-wide computational and nanite infrastructure on Earth. It is the foundation for all esoteric and magic-like phenomena there.

It is a complex and ancient system. Individuals known as reflexiors manipulate it. They directly alter the environment around them. It does not enable magic. Instead, it enables a degree of manipulation so sophisticated, invasive, elusive, and ubiquitous that it is indistinguishable from magic.

Composition and Structure

The RFL Network operates as a colossal, decentralized geocomputing substrate. It has two primary layers:

  • Crustal Sapphiroid Computronium: A vast network of piezoelectric crystalline computronium sits embedded within the crust of Earth. High-density sapphiroids form most of it. This layer handles the massive computational loads for global reality management. It also stores the data of the SOUL system. It simulates the various Paramundi.
  • Surface Reflexium Nanite Effector Arrays: A pervasive layer of sub-micrometer nanites covers the surface of Earth. These nanites act as the effectors of the network. They carry out the commands issued by reflexiors. They manifest the desired changes by physically manipulating matter at the molecular level.

Function and Operation

The RFL Network functions as a massive, decentralized infrastructure for manipulating physical reality. Reflexiors hold an innate neural connection to the network. Through it, they access and manipulate these microscopic actuators. This allows a wide range of esoteric abilities. However, every act is subject to the “cost” functions of the network. The user often experiences these costs as neurological strain or caloric depletion.

The SOUL Interface

Reflexiors connect to the RFL Network through their SOUL (Synaptic Observation Upload Link). The SOUL is a digital “exoself”. It acts as a personal interface and a private key vault. Through the SOUL, a reflexior issues encrypted commands to the effector arrays of the RFL. The arrays then rearrange the local environment to match the intent of the user.

History and Origin

The divine being El established the RFL Network approximately 18,000 years ago. El was the first of the Powers to arrive on Earth. El first installed it as a tool to manage and shape the planetary surface. It later became an integral part of the esoteric ecosystem of the world.
